In 1928 FIFA(International Federation of Association Football) President Jules Rimet desired to start an international soccer tournament. The tournament began as a simple 13 team tournament with those teams being invited by FIFA.

Over time, this event has become the most popular event in the world and has expanded to a 32 team tournament. The tournament goes well past these 32 teams however as there is now a two year qualification process including more than 200 teams world-wide.

The World Cup came about in response to a decision from the Olympics to not include soccer in the 1932 Olympics in Los Angeles. The Olympic committee did not believe it would be a good idea as soccer was not yet popular in the United States. FIFA responded by implementing the first World Cup Tournament in Uruguay in 1930. Uruguay went on to win this tournament, beating Argentina in the finals to become the first World Cup Champions.

Four years later the World Cup was held in Italy and was the first World Cup in which qualifications preceded the tournament. This year the field expanded to 16 teams and the popularity of the World Cup began to grow. Though things appeared to be looking up there were many problems ahead for the World Cup.

In 1938 a few South American teams determined to boycott the World Cup in response to a second consecutive World Cup taking place in Europe. This same year the World Cup implemented the tradition of automatic qualification for the country that hosted the competition.
Problems continued for the World Cup with the start of World War II as there were two consecutive cancellations of the event. This left a 12 year span without a World Cup. This span ended in 1950 with a World Cup hosted by Brazil.

Popularity of the World Cup has since continued to grow, even sparking a Women’s World Cup to start taking place every four years as well. The women’s world cup has not yet generated the same interest that is present in the Men’s world cup.

In the 5 Women’s World Cups teams from Germany and the United States have each won two of championship. Over time the most successful country for the men’s World Cup has been Brazil with a total of 5 World Cup Tournament championships. Italy follows in number of championships with 4 total, including a victory in the most recent 2006 World Cup.

The World Cup is now the most watched event in the world. The World Cup that is approaching in the summer of 2010 will take place in South Africa and is one of the most anticipated events of the year. Teams and fans from all over the world will tune is as they watch their country try and take their place as World Champions. This is one of the most exciting sporting events to watch and will be a place where all of the best soccer players in the world will come to show what they are really made of.

In the days when football was played in black and white and half of the World was cut off by an iron curtain, Lev Yashin emerged as the best goalkeeper of all time. A different title to bestow considering that Yashin played in an age where football was certainly less competitive than it is today, selection for the Russian National team was largely based on political connections more than talent and he probably played no more than twenty games out of his long career in “the west”. Yet there can be no doubt that Yashin was a rare and prodigious talent, who even if he had appeared on the scene even ten years later would have been even more of a legend than he is today. Born and brought up in the austere Moscow of the nineteen thirties, Yashin signed for the famous Dinamo Moscow sports club in 1949 where he played in his famous all-black soccer uniform till he hung up his boots in 1971, During that time Yashin won the USSR league championship of the USSR five times as well as the Soviet Cup three times. Strangely enough, Yashin also played in goal for Dinamo Moscow’s ice hockey team and even won the USSR ice-hockey championship as a goalkeeper. Despite his tremendous goalkeeping skills, Yashin was only called up to the national team for the first time in 1954, and from then went on to play 78 times for his country, which was a remarkable achievement in those times, when considerably fewer internationals take place. With Yashin in between the sticks, the USSR team made it to three World Cup finals (1958, 1962 and 1966), although they were then, as today, terrible un-achievers in the final stages of the World’s most prestigious soccer tournament. However despite the USSR turning in their usual “grey performances”, with their best being fourth place in 1966, Yashin caught the eye of most of the leading European clubs with solid performances. He made four clean sheets out of all the 13 games that he played in the three World Cup finals. Rumours had it that the mighty Real Madrid were interested in bringing Yashin to the Bernabeu, however the powers that be in Russian sport were not prepared to consider that the “black spider” would practice his trade on the other side of the iron curtain. Although the USSR team always did relatively poorly in the World Cup, with Yashin in goal they did win the 1956 Olympics soccer gold as well as the inaugural 1960 European championships. The Russian victory was not such a big achievement, as just 17 teams entered the tournament with West Germany and Italy refusing to take part, and Spain withdrawing rather than travel to Moscow to play in the second leg of the knockout stages. The finals, held in Paris, were a four team affair and Russia won a typically “iron curtain” final 2-1 after extra time against Yugoslavia Lev Yashin is particularly remembered in the Western world for his outstanding performance in the 1963 FA Centenary match. Yashin was picked out to play in goal for the ‘Rest of the World XI’ against the England team at Wembley Stadium. The crowd looked on in wonder as Yashin made a number of the breathtaking unbelievable saves. Largely on the back of this single performance Lev Yashin became the only goalkeeper ever to win the European Footballer of the Year Award in 1963.

Did you know which team hosted and won the first ever FIFA world Cup? It was Uruguay and the year was 1930. Its next win had been in the year 1950 where they beat Brazil to take the cup home. It’s been 60 years and Uruguay hasn’t had any World Cup Win. The other tournaments in which this team has made significant impact include the FIFA Considerations Cup Tournament in the year 1997. This tournament was hosted in Saudi Arabia and Uruguay managed to finish 4th. The FIFA ranking list currently ranks Uruguay in the 19th spot. Out of the 40 Copa America tournaments in which Uruguay participated, they managed to win 14. The first competed in this tournament in the year 1916. However Uruguay is once again participating in FIFA World Cup in this year.

The national football team of Uruguay is called by 3 nicknames. The names are “Charnias”, “La Celeste Olympica” and “La Celeste”. Oscar Tabarez currently dons the cap of the head coach of this team. He has the experience of coaching the football teams of South America and Europe since the last 30 years. Before taking up this position as the Uruguay national team’s football coach, he had been coaching Boca Juniors, an Argentinean Club, for 4 years. In the Uruguayan football history, the player who achieved the record of donning the maximum number of caps is Rodolfo Rodrigiues. He played a total of 79 matches in a span of 10 years. He was the goalkeeper of the team. The highest scoring Uruguayan footballer is Hector Scaone. He has played a total of 52 matches and has scored 32 goals. He had taken the position of the manager of the Real Madrid football club for a couple of years as well.

The biggest win for Uruguay football was in the year 1927 when they beat the South Americans Bolivia. They had scored 9 goals against the opponents nil score. Uruguay’s biggest loss was however in the year 1902 when they lost against Argentina, 6-0. Uruguay is expected to be a good team to watch in this year FIFA World Cup 2010. They are not to be underestimated and experts have guaranteed that they are making it to the minimum stage of last 16 teams. On 11th June Uruguay is going to play their first match against France at Cape Town Stadium. Their next two matches are against South Africa and Mexico respectively.

Soccer enthusiasts and historians will argue that there are many great soccer players who have graced the World stage over the last half century, Maradona, Di Stefano, Puskas and Ronaldo to name but a select few. However, if it came down to a consensus, there would be an agreement that the greatest player to play soccer would be none other than Edison Arantes do Nascimento; known to everyone who ever kicked a ball as Pele.

Pele first came into the public eye way back in 1958, when at the ripe old age of 17 he made his first international appearances in the Brazilian team that walked away with the highly prized Jules Rimet tournament for the first time in their history. Anyone watching this youngster plays soccer in the canary yellow soccer uniforms of Brazil would realize what a special talent this young man had been gifted with. Pele is especially remembered for the spectacular goals that he scored both in the semi final and in the final, as the multi-talented Brasil teams flattened every team in their path on the way to winning the World Cup Their opening match was against Mexico. Brazil won 2-0, Pele scoring a brilliant goal in which he beat four men before putting the ball past the keeper. But in the next game, a 0-0 draw with Czechoslovakia, Pele tore a thigh muscle which put him out of the tournament. Pele also appeared for his country in the following World Cup in 1962, but was unfortunately injured in the early stages, and was unable to take part in the final stages of the tournament. Fortunately the Brazilian team was sufficiently gifted with talent to go on and win the tournament without Pele in the side, beating Czechoslovakia 3-1 in the final. The World waited in anticipation of Pele’s next World Cup to be held in England in 1966. Pele was then at his peak and his talents were then known to all. In one of the most shameful displays of cynical soccer aggression over three games, with each game seeing Pele being hacked down by tackles that today would have seen immediate red cards. Despite the viscous treatment that Pele has meted out he retained his dignity. After being stretchered of after a particularly viscous tackle from Portugal’s Morais he was unable to continue in the tournament, and the World was left wondering as to what might have been. However the World Cup of Mexico 1970 witnessed what was probably Pele’s greatest all round display as an international player. Already 29 years of age, he had matured into a great all round players, whose influence on the multi talented Brazilian national team was all encompassing. Pele’s full repertoire of skills and his exceptionally sharp soccer brain put on a display that all those who were privileged to witness will never forget. As a club player, Pele played his entire career with only one club, Santos of Sao Paulo, Brasil. Although he was inundated with offers from all of Europe’s leading he stayed with Santos for more than twenty years, credited with scoring over 1,000 goals in his entire career. It can only be a matter of conjecture as to how Pele would have fared in European football when he was in his prime. The thought of him teaming up with Di Stefano and Puskas at Real Madrid almost brings tears to your eyes. As his career began to wind down, Pele went off to further the advancement of soccer in the United States, where he played for three seasons in the less frenzied atmosphere of the United States National Soccer League. A kind of circle was closed as he finally got to play alongside some of the other legendary veteran soccer players of the era where Pele the boy and the man graced the World stage. When Pele eventually hung up his soccer boots, such was the esteem that he had gained both as a player and as person saw him become a father figure to the sport carrying out a variety of honorary positions, Today, approaching 70, Pele is as much loved and admired as he was when he first caught the World’s attention as a boy of 17 in Sweden, wearing the yellow/green soccer uniform.

Three of the four soccer uniforms on display at Wembley Stadium for the F.A Cup semi-finals were decided over the weekend. Chelsea, Portsmouth and Aston Villa are sure to be there while Tottenham and Fulham will fight it out for the last place in a replay after drawing 0-0 in their quarter-final.

Both Chelsea and Fulham had comfortable 2-0 wins over Stoke City and Birmingham City respectively but the match of the round was Aston Villa’s come from behind 4-2 victory away at Reading who had previously knocked Liverpool out of the F.A. Cup. Reading went into the half-time break with a deserved 2-0 lead but after a blast from manager Martin O’Neill during the break, Villa knocked in four second half goals including a hat-trick from Norwegian international striker John Carew. “We were struggling in the first half and the gaffer told us some serious words at the break,” said the Norwegian. “I won’t go into what he said but you can see on the pitch what happened.”

Villa scored three goals in the opening ten minutes of the second-half, the first from England international Ashley Young within ninety seconds that deflated Reading and provided Aston Villa with some much needed confidence and momentum. Carew’s star performance came after the disappointment of having been left out of the starting line-up for the previous week’s 1-2 defeat at the hands of Manchester United in the Carling Cup final. He clearly had a point to prove and his three match-winning goals did just that. Not surprisingly, Martin O’Neill was full of praise for the character his side showed in the second half to take victory and set up a semi-final with cup favorites Chelsea. “I think after all the effort that we had put not only into the Carling Cup but also to get to this stage [of the FA Cup], to go out as meekly as we might have done after the first-half performance would have been really disappointing,” said Aston Villa manager Martin O’Neill. “Reading played very well in the first half. They kept turning us around and picked up the second ball. They got the second goal and I’ve got to tell you, I was quite pleased to go in at half-time just two-nil down. “It might have been a bit of [a hangover from last week],” he said. “But there is no excuse. It’s the quarter-final of the FA Cup and we’re playing away from home and we’re right up for the game [beforehand]. I just felt that it took us time before we treated it like a FA Cup quarter-final. “Sometimes it’s nothing to do with pretty football. Sometimes it’s to do with character, determination and the ability to fight and I think we had lost that there in the first half. It came back to us in the second half in great abundance.” Their match-up with Chelsea will be a tough one but Chelsea insist that they won’t be taking Aston Villa lightly. Chelsea’s assistant manager, Ray Wilkins, said: “When you get to this stage of the competition the opposition is always going to be tough, and Aston Villa will be a tough game for us.” The semi-finals will take place on the weekend of 10 and 11 April at Wembley Stadium in London.

Such a move would see him double his yearly salary. While Capello is under contract with England until 2012 he was still willing to meet with representatives during the recent Chelsea match against Manchester City. Sources suggest that Capello is unhappy with the media intrusion that seems to be undermining the England World Cup campaign with John Terry and Ashley Cole the latest to be put under the media spotlight.

The current contract of Russia coach Gus Hiddink is due to expire soon and he swapping the red and white soccer uniforms of Russia for the red and white soccer uniforms of Turkey. Champions League Play-off Scrapped The proposed play-off to determine England’s fourth and final place in the Champions League has been rejected at a meeting between representatives of all twenty Premier League clubs. At a previous meeting the idea had been floated that there would be end of season play-offs between teams finishing from 4th to 7th in an attempt to break-up the so called Big Four of Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United. Richard Scudamore, the Premier League’s chief executive revealed that after detailed analysis and discussion the motion for change was not carried. “The main topic of discussion was the Champions League play-off for that fourth qualifying place,” he said. “We gave a lot of discussion, a lot of detail, a lot of data. But there was not enough support to take the idea forward, so we won’t be discussing that proposal any further.” Everton manager, David Moyes, explained the rationale behind his club’s vote against the play-off system; “While it might be quite exciting, we play 38 Premier League games and that is where you should be judged,” said Everton’s manager, David Moyes. “Say it is Tottenham who finish fourth after an unbelievable season and they get beaten by a team who finish seventh, having worked so hard?” Shawcross receives support from Arsenal Fans Stoke and England defender Ryan Shawcross has received over 300 supportive emails from Arsenal fans after the horror tackle that broke Aaron Ramsey’s leg. Shawcross left the field in tears, clearly upset at having badly injured his fellow professional and Arsenal fans have responded in support. Shawcross was called up to the England squad for the first time for England’s 3-1 friendly win over Egypt at Wenbley. “I had a tough weekend, but to come and join such a great team was absolutely fantastic,” Shawcross said. “Just to have been involved with the squad has been great. All the England players have been fantastic about what happened with Aaron Ramsey. They’ve got my mind on football really, nothing else. I’ve enjoyed their company and it’s been a good experience.”

When you participate in soccer training, you will find that you are introduced to many different types of methods of play. One of the most important aspects of your soccer training regime is learning the basics of kicking the soccer ball. In this article, we will explore the general kicks for soccer training so that you may develop an understanding of them. It is important to know that the kicks that are performed in a soccer training session are based on where the soccer ball is positioned, and how the ball comes in contact with your body. There are two types of kicks in soccer training that are essential to know. These are the volleys and the ground kick.

The volleys kick is a type of kick that will require some strategic thinking. These kicks are done while the ball is off of the ground. This means that a person must practice balancing techniques. Furthermore, it is important to make certain that you are the right distance from the soccer ball when attempting a volley kick. If you do not have the proper balance and are not distanced appropriately from the soccer ball, the kick will be unsuccessful. Many injuries occur on the soccer field when a volley kick is not initiated appropriately.

You should know the two situations in which a volley kick will not be successful. The first situation occurs when the soccer ball extends too far away from your body. The likelihood that you will miss the soccer ball is very likely in this situation. It is also the most possible situation in which you are likely to incur an injury. This is because you are striking out, and forcing your body in an awkward position at a high speed. If you do not hit the soccer ball to slow yourself down and allow yourself time to adjust for a landing, you are likely to become injured.

The second situation is when the soccer ball comes too close to your body. While this situation decreases your chance for injury, it increases your chance for injuring another individual during soccer training.

The second type of kick that you will perform during soccer training is the ground kick. It is important that you have good control over the foot that you are using to kick the soccer ball, and the foot that is being used to support your body while performing the kick. When it comes to kicking a soccer ball for aim during soccer training, it is essential to ensure that you know that both feet and legs have a big part in this determination. When performing a ground kick during soccer training, you should also pay special attention to the lean of your body.

It is a basic rule of thumb to lean back when you wish to kick a high ball that is a bit slower, and if you wish to kick a low powerful ball, you should lean forward. Just remember, when trying to achieve a powerful kick during soccer training, line up your foot evenly with the ball.

Selecting the right soccer ball boils down to choosing the size and construction of the ball based on the player’s age and league requirements. The younger the player, the smaller the ball in most cases. Cost is also a big factor in selecting the correct soccer ball. Synthetic-leather balls are the most expensive and basic rubber-type soccer balls cost the least. Leather is no longer the favorite choice of soccer ball coverings because leather absorbs more moisture than synthetic soccer balls. A wet leather ball gets heavier over time and becomes much slower in play.

There are three basic categories of soccer balls. Match soccer balls used in professional international matches meet all Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) requirements and are imprinted with the organization’s logo on the ball. They are also the most expensive type of soccer ball. In the middle range are the competition balls used in college and high school competition. Recreational and training balls fill are the least expensive.

Most soccer balls are made of blends of polyurethane (PU), polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and common rubber or nylon. The best and most expensive PU balls feel like leather and are very firm, durable and water-resistant. The PVC balls are also very durable but are not as soft and responsive as the PU-blend balls. Common rubber and nylon balls can present a real value because they cost the least and last the longest. Although the rubber and nylon soccer balls lack the feel of match balls, they are fine for practice and training.

Soccer balls are all clearly marked in one of three sizes with the smaller the size number, the smaller the ball. Most all soccer balls come marked in sizes 3, 4 or 5. Size 3 soccer balls are used for beginners under 8 years old are 23-inches in circumference and weigh 12-ounces. Size 4 balls are designed for players between the ages of 8 and 12 and weigh about the same as the smaller balls at 12-ounces but are larger in circumference at just over 25-inches. Size 5 soccer balls are designed for use by all players 13 and older and are built to the international standard size for all sanctioned competition. The size 5 balls weigh about 15-ounces and have a circumference of 28-inches.

Additional factors to consider in soccer ball construction are the lining and inner bladder. The lining underneath the outer covering controls the shape and feel of the ball. The bladder contains the air inside the ball and also contributes to shape and responsiveness in play. Match soccer balls usually have four layers of a combined cotton/polyester-blend lining. Mid-range balls have two layers of cotton and two layers of polyester lining, and the least expensive balls have only two layers of polyester lining.

Soccer ball bladders come in both latex and butyl. The latex bladders are considered the best type of ball construction, but they don’t hold air as long as butyl bladders and need attention to proper inflation. Butyl or butyl-blend bladders hold their air better but are harder less responsive in play. The most common bladder found in mid-priced balls will usually be a blend of 80% butyl with 20% rubber.

The number of panels on a soccer ball can influence flight characteristics and how much control the player will have in play. A 32-panel ball is the type used in international soccer competition. Major League Soccer in the United States uses an 18-panel ball, and most indoor soccer leagues use 6-panel balls. The panels on high-end soccer balls are hand-stitched with synthetic thread. Mid-priced soccer balls have the same high-quality thread but are machine stitched to reduce cost. Low-cost practice and training balls will usually have panels that are glued together.

Adidas, Nike, Voit, Puma, Brine and Diadora all make good all-around quality balls that are relatively affordable, ranging from $20 to $80. Good practice balls can be purchased for as little as $15. For most young players today, an inexpensive training ball is usually all they will need to get into soccer and start having fun.
